Why do I need a consultation appointment?

During your consultation we will assess your teeth, gums and soft tissues in your mouth and discuss your treatment objectives to determine the most appropriate treatment for you. It is essential that you have this consultation to help ensure that our team has a good understanding of your teeth and the appropriate treatment necessary. Our consultation appointment also gives us an opportunity to meet our patients at Thornton Dental we pride ourselves on developing a good relationship with our patients.

How often do I need X-RAYS?

It depends on your current dental health. If your dental risk profile is low, then once every two years may suffice. However, if a cavity is being monitored, then as frequently as six monthly may be necessary to assess size and depth.

What is dental decay?

Dental decay, or caries is a common disease, which causes cavities and discoloration of both permanent and “baby” teeth. As the disease progresses in a tooth it becomes weaker and its nerve may be damaged.

What is the difference between amalgam and composite fillings?

Amalgam is a metal alloy including silver, small amounts of mercury and other metals. Composite is a plastic resin based material. There are many factors to consider when selecting the filling material. Your dentist can discuss with you the most appropriate material for your individual situation.

Why do I need fluoride?

Fluoride strengthens the tooth surface and makes teeth less prone to cavities, especially when applied within 2 years following tooth eruption. Fluoride is a major part of modern preventive dentistry.

What is a mouthguard?

A mouthguard is a removable, soft and flexible shield placed over usually the upper teeth. It is also a strong material to withstand the rigors of sporting injury situations.

What payment options are available?

We accept cash or we have on site EFTPOS and Credit Card facilities.
If you have Private Health Insurance, we have the facilities to process your claims on the spot at the time of your appointment so that you are only required to process the GAP payment.
For more expensive treatments or treatments where you are required to attend multiple appointments, we are happy to set up an instalment plan with you on request
