What comes to mind when you hear the words “spring” and “cleaning”?
For many of us, the connection is clear – spring means warmer temperatures and the chance to get out and clean our windows, clean our closets, do yard work, and generally spruce up the look of our houses.
And while we tend to focus on our home, exercise routine (sometimes!) and maybe even cleaning the closets we spent all winter shoving things into, there is one more area that can use a little TLC.
It’s your mouth and smile! In fact, there no better time than spring to optimise your oral health care routine, put a shine on your teeth, and get any treatments you might need to spend spring and summer with a big smile on your face.
At Thornton Dental, we’d like to share some things you can do and some things we can do to help you with your dental spring cleaning!
Things you can do for a dental “spring cleaning”
Here are a couple of suggestions from the friendly folks at Thornton Dental for your spring cleaning.
Floss before bed. Flossing daily is a vital part of avoiding to plaque and tartar, which can lead to gum disease. But it turns out that when you floss may have an impact on how effective your flossing is.
As we sleep, less cleansing saliva is produced so that bacteria can do more damage. So, floss at night and go to bed with your mouth as clean as possible to help fight those bacteria off.
Replace your toothbrush. How long have you had your toothbrush? According to the Australian Dental Association, you should buy a new toothbrush every 3-4 months. When bristles are worn out or frayed, a toothbrush doesn’t clean effectively.
So if you’ve had your toothbrush through winter, we recommend a brand new one for spring. And if you’ve been sick? Make sure that part of your recovery is to buy a new toothbrush to avoid re-infecting yourself.
Upgrade your toothbrush. If you don’t feel as though your manual toothbrush is getting the job done, consider moving to an electric toothbrush. An analysis of 56 studies published in 2014 found that electric models work better than manual brushes. Electric brushes reduced dental plaque 21 per cent more and gingivitis 11 per cent more after three months of use.
And if you have trouble brushing effectively, or limited mobility in your hands, an electric toothbrush can make the process a whole lot easier.
Stock your bathroom. While you’re spring cleaning the house, scope out your stock of oral hygiene supplies. Are you low on toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, or other dental hygiene supplies? Is your mouthwash past its expiration? Spring cleaning is the perfect time to go shopping and stock up for the summer.
Professional cleaning for your dentures. Dentures are brushed each day to keep the dentures and mouth clean. Every once in a while, however, your dentures can benefit from a professional cleaning and checkup to see if they are clean, in shape, and a good fit.
Spring is a great time to take them to Thornton Dental. We can professionally clean them, check fit, and repair any wear or damage.
